In Drumheller, we visited the Royal Tyrrell Museum.
This museum is all about dinosaurs, fossils and the evolution of species over millions of years on this planet. The museum has recently undergone a multi-million dollar expansion and re-opened in 2019. It is huge and there were lots of hands-on displays. The Journey Through Time exhibit walked us through the paleozoic, mesozoic and cenozoic eras. In the different sections, there were fossils that related to each particular era. They even had some live animals! Did you know that this planet has seen 5 separate global extinctions? In the 3rd extinction 251 million years ago in the Permian-Triassic time, 96% of all species perished. At the start of each era, there were globes demonstrating the position of all of the continents at that point in history.
A real T-Rex scull
The entrance to the Journey Through Time exhibit
We watched a documentary and learned that only 1% of the museum's collection is on display. We learned that it takes years for new fossils to be prepared to a point of being ready for display. Alberta is one of the most fossil-rich areas in the world and new fossils are always being discovered.
We had a great day and learned a ton!

We had a great time there, when we drove across Canada with our kids. Did you camp at Dinosaur Provincial Park? Sinjin
ReplyDeleteHey Sinjin - we copped-out of camping in Drumheller and stayed in an AirBNB instead... we needed a short break! Thanks for touching base!
