This week we went to a Luau! A Luau is a Hawaiian celebration.
When you enter, you are given a lei - a Hawaiian necklace. There are tattoos and bracelets for the kids. There is a kid bar as well as an adult bar!!!
For dinner, we had a pig that was cooked in an Earth oven for 8 hours. An Earth oven is a pit that you put your animal in- an imu. Then, you put hot rocks in the pit to cook the animal. You can cover it up with banana leaves to keep the heat in!
When the party starts, they have a ceremony to "unearth" the pig. We watched two men take the pig out of the ground. Trust me, if you are vegetarian, you would not want to watch it. One of the guys was picking up burning coals and rocks with his bare hands!!! I would hate to be one of the guys because they accidentally dropped some of the pig in front of everyone... There went half our meal!!!
Anyway, it wasn't that big of a deal because there was plenty of things for everyone to eat (other than the pig). There was Poi (a taro root sloppy slimy dish that I detest), chicken, salad, beef, potato, pineapple, macaroni salad, rice and much more I can't remember.
After dinner, there was a long show with music and dancing! There was a band, a hostess and 8 dancers (4 girls and 4 boys). They took us to all the Pacific islands and did a traditional dance from each one! At the end, one dancer did a routine with fire! He swung fire around for ~5 minutes straight! It was amazing- I couldn't watch!
At one point in the show, they pulled spectators up from the crowd. My dad was picked and had to go up to learn the hula in front of everyone. It was really funny! He did a great job.
The show was amazing and so was the food!
It was a night none of us will forget!
If you go to Hawaii,
YOU HAVE TO GO TO A LUAU!!!!!!!!
