After visiting the Coromandel Peninsula, we drove back to
Auckland and flew from Auckland to Christchurch. Christchurch is in the South Island. The airport was super cool. It included a giant Christmas tree, lounge
hammocks outdoors and painted poles in the car park.
We picked up our rental car and drove north to Hanmer
Springs. This town was in the middle of
the mountains.
We stayed in an adventure holiday park that had a fun playground. A 2 minute drive from the holiday park were thermal pools. This complex had 22 hot pools- all heated from the ground- and 4 water slides. It was pretty empty so we were able to go on the slides multiple times. My favourite slide was the Conical Thrill- which is NZ's largest slide and just opened in Novemeber 2019.
